  1.  This is the Windows README file for PocketD Plus v5.1  - PocketWare
  2.  -------------------------------------------------------------------

  4.  PocketD Plus is an extremely powerful DOS-based file manager that
  5.  allows the user to automate complex and routine file housekeeping
  6.  operations for Windows and DOS. Much of this power rests in the
  7.  powerful template facility and PocketD's ability to easily combine
  8.  very many selection criteria and operations into a single command.
  9.  This capability is way beyond that provided by Windows
  10.  Explorer/File Manager. Many users have contacted us asking if
  11.  PocketD can do some automated task they require. Almost always the
  12.  answer is yes and almost always the alternative would have been to
  13.  write a C/PASCAL program or Unix shell/awk script to do the same
  14.  task. Some of these and other problems solved are documented under
  15.  "hot tips" on our web page at:

  19.  PocketD is useful for many simple tasks, but has also been used in
  20.  more exotic applications such as the creation of HTML scripts,
  21.  QUAKE front-ends and even generating C code! We have even had many
  22.  Unix users asking for PocketD for Unix, despite the powerful tools
  23.  already at their disposal! (one of the big advantages that PocketD
  24.  has it that it is MUCH easier to use than Unix shell)

  26.  This version of PocketD Plus runs under Windows/Win95 and fully
  27.  supports Win95 long filenames (but not NT).

  29.  PocketD Plus received "BEST UTILITY" awards in 1992, 1994 and 1995
  30.  by PsL, WHAT PC and Ziff-Davis (BBSCON-TWO).

  32.  PocketD Plus is a Shareware product, and requires a registration
  33.  payment after a 30-day trial period.   PocketWare - ASP Member
  34.  
  35.  Installation
  36.  ------------

  38.  Since you are reading this file I assume that you have already
  39.  successfully decompressed or copied the release files to a
  40.  subdirectory from where you intend to run it. If you are simply
  41.  reading this file from a release disk or CD, then you should copy
  42.  this and the other release files to a subdirectory where you intend
  43.  to run PocketD from.
  44.  
  45.  There are then two steps to installation:
  46.  
  47.  1.   Installation for DOS, DOS box under Windows and Windows 3.x/3.xx
  48.  
  49.       Run the file INSTALL.BAT inside the installation subdirectory.
  50.       INSTALL.BAT will modify the PATH variable to include the
  51.       installation subdirectory and (optionally) modify AUTOEXEC.BAT
  52.       to also include the new subdirectory. It will also perform an
  53.       installation for Windows 3.x/3.xx if required.

  55.       IMPORTANT!  --> Now re-start Windows
  56.

  58.  2.   Extra Installation step for Windows95/WindowsNT only
  59.  
  60.       Step (1) above must be completed and Windows re-started before
  61.       proceeding below.

  63.       The user must now perform the following simple steps:
  64.  
  65.       a)   Use Windows Explorer or the drive icon (inside "My
  66.            Computer") to select the installation subdirectory.
  67.  
  68.       b)   Click on the file "pocketdp.grp". This will start up a
  69.            folder showing the icons "Read Me" and "PocketD Plus".

  71.       These simple steps will have added "PocketD Plus" to the START
  72.       menus. The user can copy a short-cut to the "PocketD Plus"
  73.       icon to the desktop, if required.

  76.  Using PocketD inside Windows
  77.  ----------------------------
  78.  The menu-driven interface "MenuD" for PocketD Plus is not a Windows
  79.  application, but can be easily used from within Windows. It will
  80.  support a Microsoft mouse (a DOS mouse driver will be required if
  81.  running under Windows 3.x/3.xx). The mouse interface has been
  82.  greatly improved since v4.6 and now works well under Windows.

  84.  NOTE! The core command-line program D.EXE and DL.EXE are not mouse
  85.  driven and so will not respond to the mouse wehn being run by
  86.  MENUD.EXE! The user will have to use the keyboard until control
  87.  returns to MENUD.EXE.

  89.  Full PocketD Plus for Windows95/WindowsNT?

  91.  This is a future project. Existing registered PocketD users will be
  92.  able to upgrade to PocketD for Windows for a heavily discounted
  93.  price, when it becomes available.

  95.  What is PocketD used for?
  96.  -------------------------
  97.  PocketD allows the user to look for, browse, examine, copy and
  98.  manipulate files with the flexibility of a programming language. It
  99.  is astonishingly powerful for performing operations for which there
  100.  is no other reasonable solution.

  102.  PocketD for Managing my Windows 95 hard disk?
  103.  ---------------------------------------------
  104.  PocketD Plus is ideal for setting up automated procedures for
  105.  backing up key system and user files during Windows start-up. The
  106.  user can use the MENUD.EXE program for this under Windows (icon
  107.  "PocketD Plus"). This will allow the on line creation of backup and
  108.  system procedures which can then be added to the "Start-up" folder.

  112.  MenuD provides full access to the on-line guide and manual which
  113.  describes each of the 300+ options in detail and provides worked
  114.  examples. The install disk also includes printable documentation
  115.  files giving quick examples, network management uses and a general
  116.  introduction.

  118.  The registered version comes with a comprehensive bound 110-page
  119.  pocket-sized manual which is packed with many example applications
  120.  from common day-to-day disk and network management to exotic
  121.  examples such as the automatic generation of C source code.
